The Windows NT security manual that I wrote in 1998 called, "The Hardening of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0" has been referenced in:
- "Microsoft TechNet: ITSEC FC2-E3 Installation of Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0"
- "This configuration document the authors has taken recommendations from the following industrial recognized publications into the account"
- "Integrity and Internal Control in Information Systems: Connection Governance and Technology", Volume 4
- "The book contains a collection of papers from the Fourth International Working Conference on Integrity and Internal Control in Information Systems (IICIS), which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Brussels, Belgium in November 2001. It will be essential reading for academics and practitioners in computer science, information technology, business informatics, accountancy and IT-auditing."
Interesting history
Some things go back a ways to... when I was a teenager. Before I had status. Before I had a pager...
- I've been in Marie Antoinette's grotto. It was danker than I expected.
- I had a praying mantis land on my shoulder in the middle of Harvard Sq. It perched there for about a half hour before flying away.
- I've been shot at three times in my life: Once with a handgun on I-495 in Lawrence, once with a rifle in my own neighborhood in North Cambridge, and a third time with a BB-gun in Duxbury.
- I've actually been shot twice. Once with the rifle (grazed really), the second with the BB-gun (10 pumps hurts like you wouldn't believe). The multiple shots fired at my father and I on I495 (I was the closer target) missed my head by about an inch.
- I've done a tabletop on a BMX bike as well as a moto-cross bike.
- I've out-run the police on a moto-cross bike (hi Arlington police!), a sport bike (hi former MDC police!) as well as a Camaro (hi Randolph police!). The sport bike (GSX-R) was about speed and maneuverability through Storrow Drive, Memorial Drive, and finally loosing the cop in Watertown. Make no mistake - the MDC police used to be the worst cops around, with power equivalent to Staties, and typically with a chip on their shoulder (ask a local). Since the Camaro ('80 Z-28) was 3 gears of low-end power without any decent top-end speed, that chase was more about guile and playing cat-n-mouse. The first instance on the moto-cross bike was admittedly my fault - I was riding in the woods too close to a residential area. The other two instances I was chased for *no reason*. In my opinion, it was criminal profiling both times - but I didn't stick around to ask.
- I've had the pleasure of being waved into high-end clubs without having to wait in line - based on appearance and entourage. Yep, it feels as cool as it looks.
- I went to school with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
- I've been solicited for both drugs and sex on the streets of Boston. I declined.
- I've been to a studio taping of ZOOM.
- I'm pretty sure I know the cause of the 1990 AT&T East Coast phone service outage. Although it likely involved a programming error for a 5ESS switch, the root cause was probably because the switching equipment was asked to do something that it would never do under normal calling circumstance - and certainly not at the quantity that was presented to it. Comparatively speaking, this could be considered similar to many modern day technology vulnerabilities that don't have appropriate condition checks because engineers and developers did not consider intentional misuse. The resulting crash was not intentional - it was just some kids having some inter-state telecommunications fun.
